Gym and Sports

The College gyms allow students to train and keep fit, right on their doorstep. Students have access to Howlands Gym and to the newly opened Walker gym on-site for personal use. The modern gym has all of the facilities needed for students of all experience levels, including a choice of cardio and weight machines as well as a squat rack and bench and free weights.

Students can sign up annually for the gym and membership fees are heavily subsidised for JCR/MCR members. A gym induction is provided to all members when they sign up.  Whether training for College and University sports or simply keeping fit, all members of the College can sign up to the gym.

Opportunities for sport and exercise can place a key role in the health and wellbeing of our student community and our facilities support this.

Stephenson has one indoor sports facility in Howlands Hall plus two outdoor sports playing areas, including a floodlit MUGA which can be used to play tennis, netball and basketball amongst others, and a playing field which is used for football, hockey, ultimate frisbee and lacrosse! Stephenson’s boat house is located on the River Wear near the Sport and Wellbeing Park.
